Fulfilling a Mission of Scholarship, Research, and Service for a Century

During 2008-2009 the Gevirtz School will celebrate 100 years of preparing educators, as the Santa Barbara State Normal School was established as a two-year college program for training manual arts and home economics teachers in 1909. Our new building will open in time for the next school year, a cutting-edge new home for the school as we head into our second century.

Please return to this webpage to learn about all the events we are planning to celebrate our first 100 years.

A Message from the Dean

Parents and grandparents in California and the nation hope for excellent teachers for their children. They recognize the immense influence that teachers have on children’s social, economic, and civic futures. Preparing just the right educator for every child is a formidable task and one that continues to escalate in complexity as our population of students becomes more diverse and the knowledge standards they must master become more rigorous.

The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education is proud to be the descendant of a 100 year tradition in Santa Barbara of developing teachers to meet and exceed the expectations of California families. We are also proud to have extended our mission into generating knowledge to improve teaching and learning science, to create strategies to reduce risk and increase resiliency among children and youth with many different abilities and life circumstances, and to support families and communities to build healthy environments in which all members have equitable opportunities to thrive.

We celebrate the past accomplishments and the future challenges. We invite you to celebrate with us as we commit to another century of imagination, innovation, and inspiration.
