Degree Requirements

Combined Core
The Committee on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association requires that students take theory courses in designated Core areas (listed below). The courses in Sections I, II, and IV are designed to familiarize students with the knowledge bases that form the core foundations of scientific psychology, whereas the courses in Sections III and V focus more specifically on applications of psychology. Some requirements include a menu of options from which students may select. Courses other than those on the menu may be taken to fulfill some of these requirements. Students should consult with their advisor in order to select the specific courses in each area that best fit their professional goals and substantive area. Students should be aware of specific unit requirements in other states for licensure and credential certification.

Course Substitution Policy

Students entering the Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology doctoral program with previous graduate coursework or other relevant coursework within the past five years may substitute that coursework for selected course and practicum requirements if they can demonstrate equivalence. Students seeking substitutions must obtain the approval of their advisor and an appropriate UCSB instructor. An appropriate UCSB instructor is one who is currently listed as an instructor of the course for which substitution is being requested. The student must demonstrate to the satisfaction of the instructor that the content of the course being substituted is equivalent to the corresponding UCSB course. If the UCSB instructor fails to grant equivalency, the student may appeal to the Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology Department faculty.
