Teacher Education Program
UCSB’s Teacher Education Program offers the Multiple-Subject, the Single-Subject (in 6 content areas), the Level I & II Education Specialist Moderate/Severe Teaching Credentials, and an M.Ed. in Teaching. These programs are full-time, post-graduate programs that begin in June and conclude the following June or July. The programs are run as a cohort, with the elementary and secondary cohorts no larger than 60 students each, and the special education cohort no larger than 15. This allows for the individualized attention necessary for high-level preparation of reflective, skilled practitioners who can meet the needs of children and adolescents with diverse backgrounds and diverse needs.
Candidates are placed in partner K-12 schools throughout the 9-month academic year, student teaching in the morning and attending university classes in the afternoon/evening. We believe this allows for a more streamlined, purposeful integration of university and fieldwork. The importance of this integration drives our faculty to collaborate across all aspects of teacher preparation. We are unique in that many of our faculty both supervise candidates in the field and teach university courses. The result is a cohesive, well-articulated program of study that takes candidates through each developmental phase of learning to teach.
Degrees: M.Ed. in Teaching (student must also complete work for a teaching credential)
Credentials: Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (MST);
Single Subject Teaching Credential (SST) in Art, English, Foreign Language (French, German, Latin, and Spanish), Math, Social Science, and Science (Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, and Physics);
Level I & II Education Specialist Moderate/Severe Teaching Credentials (ESC)
