Frequently Asked Questions: Ed and Applied
Psych Minor
The minor is designed for students who want to work with research faculty and learn more about issues confronting education, for students preparing for a teaching career in elementary or secondary education or exploring a career in education, and for students exploring a career in counseling, clinical or school psychology.
Students choose to follow one of three tracks: Applied Psychology, Educational Studies, or Teacher Preparation.
Complete information regarding the Education and Applied Psychology Minor is located on the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education's website.
The classes required depend on which minor track you are pursuing,
Applied Psychology: Counseling, Clinical and School Psychology
The Minor requires a minimum of 18 upper division quarter units with a grade of C, P or better. Students can take 5 units Pass/No Pass. Five units can be taken for Independent Study (Education 199 or Education 199R). Because the number of units for courses are subject to change and some courses have variable units, the number of units applied to the minor will be the number of units appearing for a course on a student's transcript.
Six upper division quarter units can be transferred from another college or university besides UCSB if the units are approved by the course instructor and faculty advisor in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. There is no limit on how many units can be applied from courses at UCSB, if approved.
Three Core Education courses including one practicum are required. The remaining units for the Minor can be selected from the course Electives.
Students will choose a track to follow for their minor in Education and Applied Psychology: the Educational Studies Track, the Teacher Preparation Track or the Applied Psychology Track. Each track specifies the required Core courses and Electives for that track
After you have completed one required class for the minor, you may petition to add the minor. The Petition to Declare the Minor is available either on the Ed. and Applied minor website or from the Student Affairs Office located in Phelps 1180. The completed petition should be returned to the Student Affairs Office in Phelps Hall, Rm 1180.
Each track has a track advisor. Please contact the appropriate track advisor if you have questions about the content of any of the classes. Answers to any general questions about the Minor can be found through the Ed. And Applied Minor website.
Applied Psychology Track: Dr. Melissa Morgan, mmorgan@education.ucsb.edu
Educational Studies Track: Dr. Betsy Brenner, betsy@education.ucsb.edu
Teacher Preparation Track: Tine Sloan, tine@education.ucsb.edu
